Brief Answer:
Kindly give some more details

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,welcome to HCM forum.

Kindly give some more details,so that we can have a better idea.

1)How did it start?following a bite,or spontaneous?
2)What was the initial size?Is it progressively enlarging?
3)Was that purple from the beginning itself?Or,initially filled with clear fluid and later became purple?
4)Do you have any echymoses or bruises anywhere else in the body?
5)Any medical illnesses or regular drugs?

Waiting for your reply.
Thank you.

I do recall biting it accidentally about two days before the swelling happened. It is the size of a lima bean and it isn't getting bigger but it isn't going down at all. It was always purple. I don't have any other bruises on my body. I never take drugs not even prescriptions and I am hardly ever sick. I have insurance but the time it takes to go to a doctor and wait to see him costs me more in lost earnings than it's worth. What do you think this is - should I be alarmed?

Brief Answer:
probably mucus retention cyst

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
Thanks for the information.
Lip swelling following accidental bite is usually a mucus retention cyst. These are caused by injury to ducts of minor salivary glands. Most commonly they appear as colorless, but deeper ones may appear purple. Usually they resolves their own in few days.
Another possibility is a submucous hematoma, though it is unlikely to persist more than 5 to 7 days.

As your swelling is not resolving even after 2 weeks, it indicates persistent communication with the duct and failure of spontaneous resolution. It is better to drain the swelling to avoid secondary infection and further complications thereof.
A dental surgeon or general surgeon can guide you.
No need of any hurry. You can arrange and wait for your appointment.

Hope I have answered your query.
Wishing you good health.
Thank you.

Hello Dr. Aslam,

Thank you for following up. I still have the lump. It is now turning whitish as before it was a dark bluish-purple. I guess that is a good sign?

I am not as worried knowing it's a blood blister. I suppose if it;s still there at the end of Oct - I will make an appointment.

Kind regards.
