Suggest Treatment For Prolapsed Uterus And Bladder

default
Posted on Tue, 17 Mar 2015
Question: I have been told that I have a prolapsed uterus and a bladder prolapse. I have been advised by my surgeon that I can have a hysteropexy or have my uterus removed. She is also suggesting I have the fallopian tubes taken away in both cases. If I have a hysteropexy she is suggesting I have a mirena inserted. Can you advise the pros and cons of both options? Also the purpose of the mirena?

Brief Answer:
Both surgeries are equally effective

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing..
I understand your concern..

Both surgeries are equally effective.. In the first one uterus will be removed vaginally and bladder prolapse will be corrected vaginally.. You will require hospital stay for 4 days.. Post op pain will last for 1-2 weeks.. No recurrence of prolapse will occur..

In hysteropexy, through laproscopy uterus is lifted up using mesh and suspended on to the sacrum.. Uterus will be retained.. Bladder prolapse will be corrected.. Post pain will be less.. Chance of recurrence can be there but less.. Cost will be higher as compared to previous surgery..

I would suggest the first option if you are not keen on retaining your uterus..

Have you attained menopause? If no, do you have bleeding problems.. If there is no menstrual issues, I dont see any need for mirena insertion..

Hope i have answered your query.. feel free to ask any doubts.. good day..

I have not had a period for 3 years and believe I have attained menopause. Can you advise me what are the pros and cons of retaining the uterus as opposed to having the uterus removed. How will this affect my hormone production?

Brief Answer:
Uterus can be removed

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing..

Since you have attained menopause, uterus can be removed with pelvic floor repair.. There is no difference in hormonal levels even if uterus is retained as you have attained menopause.. If uterus is retained, there can be mesh related problems in some..

Hope I have answered your query..Good day..
