Question: Hi. Please have a md doc answer me. I'm 51 and have had a polyp in my uterus for several years. My uterus is enlarged. Should I have the polyp removed? Also in office my dr. Removed a polup in my lining and now I'm bleeding light to medium for over 5 weeks. What should I do? And I have a few small cysts on my left ovary.

Brief Answer:
No need to remove if you don't have heavy bleeding.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Dear,

Thanks for posting your query. I am available to give your answer.

1) If you DON'T have any irregular period or heavy bleeding or cramp for last few years, then uterine polyp may NOT be needed to remove at this age (51 years) as you will go through natural menopause within few years. At that time, they will mostly shrink and DON'T cause any further problem as they are almost benign.

2) You don't need to worry about small ovarian cyst. They will go away when you have natural menopause.

However, bleeding after removal of polyp needs to be controlled and you have to take some treatment.

I can recommend progesterone supplement and medicine like Tranexamic acid. These are prescription drugs and you should consult with your treating doctor. They will help to arrest bleeding. Maintain genital hygiene properly.

Hope, I have answered your query. Wish your good health and take care.

Dr. Patria, thank you so much! This helps comfort me since I was prepared for a D&C within weeks. Now I feel I will wait.
--- Do you know why I would bleed over a month after the lining polyp was removed? Also, I have a natural progesterone cream from dr. Colbert website; could that work?
Hope you are having a wonderful day!

Brief Answer:
Bleeding due to improper cauterization.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Dear,

Thanks for follow up query.

1) If base of the polyp (after removal) is NOT properly cauterized, then medium to light bleeding may persist for long time. I suggest to consult with treating doctor for follow-up examination and proper management.

2) Progesterone pill like Medroxyprogesterone Acetate (PROVERA) and medicine like Tranexamic acid will help to arrest bleeding. Natural progesterone cream will be less effective in this purpose.

3) If bleeding continues in spite of above treatment, you may need to undergo D & C. It will be more helpful in this case.

Hope, it helps for your information. Good luck and take care.
