Suggest Treatment For Pinched Sciatic Nerve And Intermittent Sharp Leg Pain

default
Posted on Thu, 5 Nov 2015
Question: I have a pinched sciatic nerve from sleeping on a lumpy mattress. The aching pain and sometimes sharp pain (especially going up stairs) comes and goes in my left leg. But even with a new TempurPedic mattress, the nerve is still irritated. Are there stretching exercises I can do for this? Or what is the best treatment?

Brief Answer:
Gabapentin, steroids, muscle relaxants, narcotics should be considered

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Sciatica pain occurs in the region over which the sciatic nerve passes including the lower back down to thigh and knee on its posterior aspect ( back of the leg). It is commonly related to a herniated disc though a pinched nerve is also a real possibility.

If NSAIDs alone aren't leading to adequate relief then steroids, gabapentin or pregabalin and muscle relaxants should be added to the treatment regimen. Based on the severity narcotics can also be added in consult with your doctor. Stretching exercises alone wont help and without supervision may lead to more pain. Bed rest is also a key aspect and many people get better with adequate pain / inflammation relief and bed rest.
Physical therapy including initial passive exercises, acupuncture and then gradual active exercises with spine care should be undertaken with the guidance of a physiotherapist.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
