Suggest Treatment For Pharynx-tonsils Inspite Of Using Ciprox

default
Posted on Sat, 31 May 2014
Question: I am suffering from throat infection since 25 April 2014. I went on 8 days of antibiotics called Ciprox which I took 1 tablet twice a day. My symptoms did not improve and I have phlegm that is greenish in color. Then another ENT doctor put me on Altacef 500, 1 tablet a day for a further 5 days. In addition, he also gave me Pontacid (1 tablet, twice a day) and Intazin (1 tablet each night). After this long period of antibiotics, my condition still did not improve very much. I was still coughing out greenish phlegm. I went back to my ENT doctor and was told to lay off taking any more antibiotics. Instead I was given Mucodin Syrup (1.5 tablespoon twice a day), Serrin (1 tablet twice a day) and also the Intazin. After another 3 days, my cough condition still persists. I was advised by my pharmacist to take Stenac (1 tablet, twice a day) to eliminate the phlegm. After 1 dose of Stenac, I cough out a lot of greenish phlegm.

My question is why am I taking so long (15 days and counting) to recover? Why is my condition not improving despite so much antibiotics? Have I been given the correct medication? Should I ask my doctor for more antibiotics to remove the green phlegm?

Brief Answer:
Throat Infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Delighted to be able to help.

Prescribed antibiotics were not used in the right ways:
-Ciprofloxacin is not the right antibiotic to treat infections of pharynx-tonsils.
-Cefuroxime if is adequate antibiotic, but the minimum days of treatment
to be effective are 7.
It would be advisable to take a powerful antibiotic for 8 days, for example
Amoxicillin-Clavulanate 875/125 mg thrice a day, 8 days.
If after finishing the 8 days of treatment your symptoms persist, your doctor
must collect a sample of your pharynx-tonsil secretion to analyze, because
sometimes the infection can be caused by atypical germs most difficult to kill.
Please consult your doctor for a prescription.

If you have less cough, less phlegm and phlegm colour is white (not green or yellow) is possible wait and not be necessary to take Amoxicillin-Clavulanate.

If in a few days continue cough, phlegm or yellow-green phlegm, your doctor should prescribe Amoxicillin-Clavulanate,8 days.
