default
Posted on Mon, 22 Sep 2014
Question: I think I need help. I have had this sore throat for about 3 months now. I have taken Augumentine 1000gm and Flagyl for 7 days twice. Once in July and another in August, still the sore throat persists. I used TCp to gaggle and used Aspirin in hot water to gaggle all at the instruction of my doctor but it still persists. Can someone help me.

Brief Answer:
Throat swab culture and sensitivity

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for your query.

The infection which has not been cured with two different antibiotics has to be identified first. This can be achieved by getting culture sensitivity of throat swab. In here the organism infecting can be identified and also will be subjected to various antibiotics. A list of those to which the bacteria is susceptible will be mentioned. Treating you with those antibiotics will surely cure the infection.

Do not gargle or take any antibiotics for three days before going for this test. You can continue with symptomatic treatment till you receive the result.

Hope, I answered your query.

Wish you good health.

regards,

Doctor, please in addition to the sore throat what other conditions could be giving me muscle aches all over my body. This has lasted since May 16th. I sleep in bits of 30min, 1 hour and awakened by pains and inflammation. As you can see in my previous posts I initially thought it could be hiv but I have done hiv tests repeatedly since May and they have all turned NEGATIVE the last being on the 28th of August and the first 26th of May.
I can not sleep well. The pain is more in a time of inactivity. If any tests is recommended I would like to do all the same time with the throat swap. My creatine level is good. My urine culture came out good. The only thing abnormal in my blood work is the lymphocyte that is 15.9%, normal range is 20-40%. Doctor Please note also that sometimes I have slight pains in my penis. Whatever you recommend would help me as I meet my doctor tomorrow.

Brief Answer:
Viral infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Need not worry.

The symptoms you have are typically seen in any viral infections superadded with bacterial pharyngitis.

Once you are placed on right antibiotics , all your symptoms would vanish for sure.

Dr. XXXXXXX I sincerely think you are very much on point here. I know it is an infection but the doctors never suggested that, treating symptoms instead of looking for the cause.
Now what kind of test do you think I should undertake to identify the particular viral infection. Your suggestions are highly valued. Kindly respond ASAP.

Thanks Dr XXXXXXX I had done CBC twice now and the doctors could not tell me any thing that is wrong or do I say they did not identify any viral infection by name and I was not given any drugs other than the ones I mentioned earlier.
How do we identify the name of the viral infection and the drugs to use with CBC because as far as I am concerned the CBC would only mention the blood components of lymphocytes, monocytes, WBC etc.

Brief Answer:
Specific viral tests not necessary

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Once the sore throat sets in, it is assured that the viral infection has ended and bacterial infection is active.

The above tests are to identify the bacteria and suitable treatment for the same.

Need not worry about the viral infection which usually will be a simple flu virus.
