Suggest Treatment For Persistent Sinus Congestion

default
Posted on Thu, 21 Jul 2016
Question: Hello, I have had severe sinus congestion for about 3 months. It stared shortly after I rehabbed my bathroom in Illinois where I was exposed to mold behind the shower walls (i assumed it was mildew) without wearing a mask or protection for a short one day period where I remediated it with bleach that same day. It also coincided with springtime. I went to the doctor about 3 weeks ago when the symptoms progressed to my chest and was told I likely have adult onset alergies and was prescribed Flonase and Zertec. The medicines seem to me helping, but only the slightest bit (after almost 3 weeks). I still am congested and blowing out mainly clear mucus and am coughing up the same. As the symptoms are not going away I am scared that the mold has effected me. The only other symptoms from mold poisioning I may have is short term memory loss, however that has never been great with me. Any thoughts or ideas are helpful, I'm more than happy to answer any questions. Thank you!

Brief Answer:
Self care along with the medicines always provide good relief.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for the detailed query.

With what you had provided you seem to have chronic sinusitis. The most probable reason could be infection through molds. If I were your treating doctor, along with the decongestive and anti allergic medicines you are taking I would like to add anti fungal medicine( TAB. AMPHOTERICIN B) which will give a better relief. Fungal infection via molds would have a typical Chest Xray. After confirming the findings on the Xray this medication can be given. So I suggest your next step should be to insist on Chest Xray and Xray PNS (paranasal sinuses) by the same doctor. If the sinuses are filled with mucus they can be drained.

As the antifungal medicines are prescribed drugs you'll have to see a local consultant to prescribe them.

Chronic sinusitis always is better relieved with the combination of medications and self care, like
1) Humidifiers in the room
2) steam inhalation
3) warm water towel on face
4) Nasal saline solutions
5) Flush out sinuses by nasal irrigation using bulb syringe and saline.
6) Drinking plenty of water.

Hope the information was useful.
Take care.
