Posted on Sat, 17 Dec 2016
Question: Hi, my name is Weldon North from Morehead Ky. I am suffering from polyneurophy, and the type has not been diagnosed yet. I have suffered with it for approximately 12 years. My nerve exams have showned a steady break down of the covering of the nerves. My leg, feet, arms, hands, face, and even around my face, are completly numb. The pain is so bad, I can barely live with it. I had back surgery in 2013 and2015 where they used the meditronic cage. It was unsucceful and had to be removed. Since the surgery my numbness and pain increased. My back surgeons released me this week and told me their was nothing else they could do. I had developed merca during the last surgery and almost died. They replaced a vertebrae and rib with stainless steel parts. He said because of the infection he would not do anymore surgery. I dont know what to do. I can't live with this much pain. Because of it being to different problems my pain management is hard to take care of. I need to get to a reputable pain management group soon. The laws on doctors prescribing opiates is extremely tough in Ky. I have been on them since 2013,and have been able to survive. I need advice on finding someone to treat my pain , or I won't make it. What can I do to get help fast.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I read your medical history carefully and understood your concerns.

First, I am very sorry for what you are experiencing. I see you have been suffering from polyneuropathy for 12 years and run through two back surgeries (in 2013 and 2015) which were unsuccessful. You have replaced a vertebra and one rib with stainless steel parts during the last surgery and developed a life-threatening MRSA.

Neuropathic pain sometimes can be very difficult to treat and control. Some people may need to be under treatment with strong painkillers like those containing morphine (opiates as in your case) which unfortunately sometimes cannot work to dominate the pain.

It is important to be in touch with a pain specialist. A pain doctor can manage properly all kind of pain using special protocols. Physiotherapy and antidepresant drugs are involved in the pain management too apart pain killers.

Electrical stimulation of the nerves and implantable devices are used to treat the pain. Spinal pumps or pain pumps implanted are used to treat pain. As they send painkiller drug directly to nervous system they reduce the pain significantly.

Spinal cord stimulation is also used to reduce the pain impulses. It is done by implanting a device through surgery near spinal cord.

This new techniques has shown to improve the quality of life in more than 50% of patients. You must discuss the options available with a pain doctor and start apropriate treatment.

Also, it is important to take under control other health conditions you may have especialy diabetes and hypertension. Protect yourself from possible infections by maintaing proper hygiene and avoid places with low sanitation and hygiene measures.

Keep you motivation up and follow healthy diet.

I was going through a rehab clinic in Kentucky, I think it is around 40 miles away from where you live (I refer to IP address you provided). You can contact the people there and schedule an appointment at the following web address:

They are specialized in rehab of patients with neuropathy as in your case. Discuss with specialists there for best treatment options in your case (can discuss also my suggestions to them).

All the best and God bless!
