Question: My wife had a surgery to remove brain tumor a week ago, Released from hospital on Sunday. Leg pain worsening, Tested today for clotting. She is fine. Her pain is increasing ,eating decreasing, no bowel movement in week since surgery. I believe she is dehydrated. How much water to get her back on track. Her leg pain causes struggles to sit or stand to drink. She drank only ounces yesterday. I just got 16 ounces of water inher in past 2 hours but it is struggle with leg pain.

in addition she is taking magnesium citrate to achieve bowel movement but this could be worsening the situation.

Brief Answer:
Could be due to electrolyte imbalance

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone through your query and understand your concerns. Possibly your wife suffers from electrolyte imbalance. Rather than giving her plain water, give her ORS (oral rehydration solution). Give her juicy fruits like citrus fruits, and bananas. They contain plenty of potassium which should help.

It would be a good idea to visit a doctor and to get her evaluated if the mentioned steps do not seem to help.

This does not answer my question. This totally avoids my question.

Brief Answer:
ORS is the mainstay of treatment.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. Pardon me for not having answered to your satisfaction. But there are a couple of issues here. You are talking about giving her plain water. That would not suffice. ORS or other electrolyte solutions have to be given. The amount should be at least 10-20 ml/kg body weight. 10 ml/kg body weight would roughly make it 16 ounces as you have already mentioned. Since that amount of ORS or fruit juices should have sufficed, I did not mention the amount separately. I had no intention of avoiding your question.

Let me know if you want to know anything specific.

Regards
