Question: My daughter is having fever since last night and i have given her calpol 250mg [5ml] at night around 8pm as fever was high, but now again in the morning at 7am she is having temperature around 100/101 degee, so i have repeated the calpol 5ml to her, could you please let me know in case of any other medicine shall i give along with this as there is no pain in throat and redness in throat. What can be the reason for the fever. She has become bit irritating and complaining headache also last night. Am i suppose to repeat calpol for every 8hours for 3days?

Brief Answer:
It looks like viral illness

Detailed Answer:
Hi...Thank you for consulting in Health Care magic.

Fever of one day without any serious symptoms could as well a viral illness. Usually rather than fever, what is more important is the activity of the child, in between 2 fever episodes on the same day. If the kid is active and playing around when there is no fever, it is probably viral illness and it doesn't require antibiotics at all. Once viral fever comes it will there for 3-4 days. So do not worry about duration if the kid is active.

You should give Paracetamol every 4-6th hourly and not 8th hourly.

Paracetamol can be given in the dose of 15mg/kg/dose every 4-6th hourly that too only if fever is more than 100F. I suggest not using combination medicines for fever, especially with Paracetamol.

If you can get back with the age and weight of your daughter, I will suggest you the right dose. Apart from this give plenty of fluids and make sure she is urinating well.

Headache is common in fever. Need not worry if there is no vomiting.

Hope my answer was helpful for you. I am happy to help any time. Further clarifications and consultations on Health care magic are welcome. If you do not have any clarifications, you can close the discussion and rate the answer. Wish your kid good health.

Brief Answer:
Till fever is there

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX ..As I have already quoted in my 1st suggestion, viral illness may persist for 3-5 days. If still fever is there even after 5 days I suggest you consult your local pediatrician.

But if there are red flag signs like - low urine output/ blood in stools/ pain during urination/ rash over the body/ seizures/ loss of consciousness/ green colored vomiting....you need not worry.

Regards - Dr. Sumanth
