Question: Persistent Dry cough:

I have been having Cough since last 5 months.

I started using new BP medication since Dec last week. My (mostly wet)cough almost started from XXXXXXX first week. I had a wet cough very often and was not able to sleep well because of cough. My throat is itchy.

In feb, I visited doctor because of Cough. Doctor suggested to change the BP Medication assuming that Cough might be caused because of the BP Medication. Even after stopping the Medication, Cough did not go away.

In March, I got the Chest-Xray and I was told that everything looks good but I was given Antibiotic for cough, which did not help at all.

I used Benedryl and doctor suggested to take Zantak but nothing helped out.

in May 2nd week I visited the doctor again complaining about cough.Doctor suspected it could be because of Acid Reflux and prescribed OMEPRAZOLE DR 40 MG.

I started taking OMEPRAZOLE from May 10 . Everyone in our house become sick with viral/Fever on May 12. with fever I had wet cough for 2 days(Fever also was lasted for 2-3 days only) and Wet/dry cough got stopped all of a sudden

on May 23 and 24, I had a symptom of burning sensation in stomach and got a sour taste in my mouth. I had also felt very sour taste when I did brushed by teeth and while doing tongue cleaning. since around 26/27, I started getting the cough back.

Symptoms of cough:
Mostly Dry but sometimes little wet.
before and after getting the cough, I am getting the Vomit sensation
before getting cough, there is lot of itching sensation.

since last few days, I started eating less, eating mostly vegitables and stopped taking excess Carbs.

Please find the Xray image attached and please suggest the solution to stop coughing.

Thank you

I uploaded the X-ray.

if there is any kind of Bacterial or viral infection of if there is any kind of Pneumonia or TB, will the Xray show us?

"X-ray is good" does it mean that I do not have any of the above?

Brief Answer:
Have you ever get done PFT?

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
You are having chronic cough, mostly dry and sometimes wet.
I have gone through the x ray image you have attached.
This x ray is normal. It is not suggestive of pneumonia or tuberculosis.
So don't worry about these diseases.
Sometimes, bronchitis can cause such coughing.
So better to consult pulmonologist and get done clinical examination of respiratory system and PFT (pulmonary function test) for the diagnosis of bronchitis.
Another cause is early heart failure because you are having hypertension.
So please let me know
1. Have you ever undergone PFT?
2. Have you ever undergone 2d echo?
Please reply me answers of above asked questions, so that I can guide you better. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.

Thank you so much for the response.

I only got X-ray in march 1st week and was told that everything looks good with the X-ray. In Month of Nov I was taken the TB test for Visa purpose(I did not have cough at that time).

Doctor who prescribed for X-ray in march also suspected "Accute Bornchitis" , though the proper tests were not done as it was urgent care visit. I was given antibiotic and other medications for cough.

Please find the Report given by the Hospital on the day of visit.

I have not undergone PFT and 2dEcho also.

This month, I do not have proper medical insurance to undergo PFT or 2dEcho.

Please suggest if there can be any solution.

Thank You

Brief Answer:
Do you have allergies?

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
So you will not be able to undergo PFT and 2d echo for 1 more month.
We should also rule out allergic etiology as a cause for this cough.
So please let me know
1. Do you have allergies?
2. Have you ever undergone eosinophil count or serum IgE level?
Please reply me answers of above asked questions, so that I can guide you better. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.

Thanks for your reply.

As of I know, I do not have any allergies. I also took Benadryl for 2 weeks which only helped with the sleep but not with the cough.

I have not undergone eosinophil count or serum IgE level.

If you think it is good to visit the doctor soon, I will make an appointment otherwise I would wait till July.

with the X-ray we can understand that this is no Pneumonia or other viral / bacterial infections and I don't think I don't have allergy. Also, Acid reflux must be ruled out as the cough did not improve even on medication.

what might be other possible causes? Do you think sometimes Heart failure might cause the persistent dry cough?

will there be any kind of Bacterial or viral infections which might cause cough and cannot be detected on X-Ray?

Thank you so much.

Brief Answer:
Early heart failure can cause dry coughing.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Normal chest ray is suggestive of absence of any lung infection (bacterial or viral).
And it is unlikely for lung infection to produce coughing for long time without producing any lesion on chest x ray.
So I don't think your cough is due to any bacterial or viral infection.
Chances of heart failure is also very less.
But I want to know few more things first before commenting on heart failure as a cause.
So please let me know
1. Do you have breathlessness on sleeping position?
2. Do you have edema feet?
Please reply me answers of above asked questions, so that I can guide you better.
I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.

To add up more information on the Heart-Monitoring, I am using FitBit and I see that my Resting Heart rate is at 68. my heart rate is around 60+ when I am resting and in the night it is going below to 57/58 and in the day time it is between 65 to 80 and while doing work-outs it is going beyond 120.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
In my opinion, you should not wait till July first week.
Better to consult doctor as soon as possible.
Ask about possible uncontrolled GERD as a cause of this cough.
I can give you some tips for better symptomatic relief in GERD.
1. Avoid hot and spicy food. Avoid junk food.
2. Avoid stress and tension, be relax and calm.
3. Avoid large meals, instead take frequent small meals. Avoid fast food.
4. Keep 2-3 pillows under head in bed to prevent reflux.
