Posted on Tue, 5 Jul 2016
Question: Hello Dr. I have questions about the digestive system. I have been having persistent diarrhoea for the past week or two. I have also been suffering from diarrhoea on and off for the past few months. Additionally, I also feel bloated at times and fart a lot. Please advise on the course of action. Could this be due to stress in my daily life, as I have been very stressed lately?

Brief Answer:
Diarrhea

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

I ams sorry to hear that you are bothered by diarrhea. Having diarrhea has numerous causes but probabaly the most common is anxiety adn stress. When you are stressed the body reacts by speeding everything up including your GI tract. When that happens you have frequent diarrhea.

Another cause of diarrhea is diet. It could be from lactose intolerance, types of food your eat more vegetables will cause diarrhea and gas, and excess caffeine will cause diarrhea.

Next would be an infection usually viral but also bacterial from food poisoning, Then absorption problems or inflammatory issues like Crohn's disease or inflammatory bowel disease. These are more consistent diarrhea with fever and bloody diarrhea.

I hope this gives you an idea of the causes of diarrhea. I would recommend first changing your diet and avoiding milk and milk products to see if that helps.

Thank you doctor. I have stopped consuming any dairy products, and reduced my meal portions too. Assuming that diarrhoea stopped, does that mean i can never have milk again, or can i gradually inteoduce it into my diet in the future?

Brief Answer:
Milk intolerance

Detailed Answer:
Yes you can gradually add milk back into your diet. But if the diarrhea re-occurs then you may have to stay away from milk. You can use Lactose free milk which you can get at stores or soy milk. Theses milk products don't have the lactose and will not cause your diarrhea
