Suggest Treatment For Persistent Diarrhea While On Imodium

default
Posted on Wed, 27 Sep 2017
Question: Hi my name is XXXXXXX Harman. I have had diarrhea for the past 4 days. Can't seem to get it stopped.
I've been trying that BRAT diet and taking Imodium. Not sure if I'm doing either one correctly. Can't find any information on how much or how often to eat this stuff. Hoping there's a better way to solve this.

Brief Answer:
Both are ok

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

BRAT diet and imodium are both ok to take.
In XXXXXXX people have used fruits-only diet during sickness especially diarheas.

Imodium can be taken 2 mg after each lose stool, maximum dose is 16 mg per day.

ORS is mainstay of treatment and it should be taken after each lose stool and vomiting. Its intake should be guided by thirst. Drinking cleaner water and eating hygienic well cooed food is a must.

Thick foods and fruits like pomegranate are considered good.

Since its been 4 days, its better to get tested for cause and take appropriate treatment. Complete blood count and stool culture and sensitivity to find bacteria or any other tests as guided by your doctor.

I need more details about your symptoms. Do you any other symptoms like fever etc? Do you have any allergies? Kindly provide more details so that I am better able to help.

Brief Answer:
Maybe E coli bacteria toxin

Detailed Answer:
Hi again

Since you stopped eating and diarhea did not improve, then its less likely to be malabsorptive or osmotic in etiology.

You have no other symptoms so its less likely to be infectious or exudative as well.

It maybe E coli bacteria toxin. Did you eat something outside? It will clear in sometime by itself. Take lots of fluids to flush out any toxins. I think eating or not eating something will not help much. You can avoid juices and milk products for some time. Take proper meals to avoid weakness. Avoid raw foods like raw fruits or salad. Proper hydration is a must. Antibiotic like cotrimoxazole may shorten the duration of illness. If diarhea persists more than 7 days, please visit a physician for further testing.
