Suggest Treatment For Persistent Diarrhea And Chills

default
Posted on Sat, 6 Feb 2016
Question: My wife, 66 years old, has had diarhea for over 36 hours. She has eaten hardly anything and drinks only a few sips of tea or ginger ale. Voiding comes on so suddenly that she has no time to go to the bathroom. Imodium has not helped. She has no fever, just elevated temperature up to 100 degrees. For the first 30 hours she hat the chills, constantly complaining to be freezing even under several blankets. What can we do to stop the diarhea. We live about 20 minutes from the nearest health facility. She would not last that long without voiding.

Brief Answer:
Most likely to be a case of acute gastroenteritis

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. I am almost certain that she has some form of stomach infection due to consumption of contaminated food or drink. Could you write back to me telling me what she had about 2-6 hours prior to the initiation of her first symptoms?

Unfortunately, the only way we can stop the diarrhoea is by medication and primarily by initiating treatment of the infection. Following are the medications I would request you to get from the pharmacy or medical store at the earliest (you need not take her along):

+Ofloxacin 200 mg (14 tablets): One table after breakfast and one after dinner
+Ranitidine or pantroprazole: 15 tablets; 1 tablet 15 minutes before each meal
+Any probiotic drink or powder from any medical store, any probiotics you can get your hands on from any grocery store
+Drink plenty of water (at least 3 litres a day)
+Only bland and boiled diet
+Avoid all fried food, fatty, food, any outside preparations

I look forward to hearing from you in case you need more of my assistance. I am always here to help, so please do not hesitate to write back to me for any further clarifications.

Best wishes.
