Posted on Thu, 7 Jan 2016
Question: I am having whopping cough for the last 3-4 days and i initially used COREX for that and it got cured for some time then again due to severe cold it started again and this time i had used ALEX+ twice 5ml daily but it seems the relief is not that much as i have cough while lying on bed and sitting as well. Could you please advice the symptoms and correct line of treatment for the same as cough is dry and its due to winter season i believe.

Please let me know the precautions as well.

Brief Answer:
Bronchitis

Detailed Answer:
Welcome to Healthcaremagic.
Hi, I am Dr Anshul Varshney , I have read your query in detail , I understand your concern.
Your history and symptoms are suggestive of Acute Bronchitis, that occurs very frequently in this season and a lot many times routine cough syrups like XXXXXXX don't provide symptomatic relief.
The treatment for allergic bronchitis constitutes of anti allergic drugs like Levocetrzine and Montelukast and in severe cases inhalers containing like Salbutamol and Steriod inhaler like Budenoside.
In case of severe spasm and coughing, a steroid like Prednisolone can be used for a short course, after being sure that there is no active infection or pneumonia.
If you don't have a severe cough or respiratory distress, and your chest is found clear on examination, then a cough syrup containing Salbutamol, Levocetrizine, Dextromethorphan will help you greatly.
Benzononate pearls are helpful in allergic cough only, as they just anesthetize the throat and reduce the allergic cough response. But in cases of severe chest congestion, they are not useful.
Also do steam inhalation for symptomatic relief.
This is my personal opinion based on details available here. If you still have any other query, you may please ask me.
Stay Healthy.

Brief Answer:
Can be taken for long as required.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I have not mentioned any name of cough syrup. You can buy Benadryl DR for the purpose.
But my point is that you would require inhalers for short course to show improvement in your bronchitis.
You would get relief with inhalers.
So, see your doctor, who would examine you and prescribe you accordingly.
Good Luck.

Brief Answer:
Inhaler is required.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
In such case i would recommend to take cough syrup like Benadryl CR or DR (which ever is available) along with Inhaler like Formonide that contains Formeterol and Budenoside.
Just the inhaler twice daily and cough syrup is going to help you with the cough with in a week, and you would be fine with in a week.
However, all these are prescription medicines and so, i would recommend you to see your doctor and get a prescription.
Good Luck.

Answered by Dr. Anshul Varshney (1 hour later)
Brief Answer:
Continue for 5 days.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
This is mostly an allergic response. So, it is advisable to continue the combination of Levocetrizine and Montelukast for 5 days so that the allergic response gets completely better.
If you have any further query, please ask me.
