Suggest Treatment For Persistent Cold And Fever In A Child

default
Posted on Sat, 6 Aug 2016
Question: My son is 5 years old and is regularly suffering from cold and fever for last 1.5 years. He is having enlarged glands on both side of the throat. Right side gland is quite visible from outside. He do have tonsil problem also. I have tried allopathy as well as homeopathy treatment. But he is still getting cold and fever every month.

Two days ago he was having continuos short coughing and running nose with fever around 100.4. I took him to a new paediatrician and he prescribed 4ml Dilo BM syrup thrice a day and 5ml Zyrcold Syrup twice a day and 5ml Crocin DS SOS. The fever is recurring after 8-9 hrs after giving Crocin DS. Doctor suggested to continue this for 3 days and if no recovery then start antibiotic medicine 5ml AZEE 200 once a day along with Dilo BM and Zyrcold Syrup.

Please suggest is the treatment correct or need to consult any other doctor.

Brief Answer:
This looks like viral illness only - I dont see a need for antibiotics

Detailed Answer:
Hi...By what you quote I feel that this is only a viral illness and doesn't require antibiotics at all. I will explain you how a viral illness behaves so that you will be more confident about your child.

Fever of few days without any localizing signs could as well a viral illness. Usually rather than fever, what is more important is the activity of the child, in between 2 fever episodes on the same day.

If the kid is active and playing around when there is no fever, it is probably viral illness and it doesn't require antibiotics at all. Once viral fever comes it will there for 4-7 days. So do not worry about duration if the kid is active.

Paracetamol can be given in the dose of 15mg/kg/dose (maximum ceiling dose of 500mg) every 4-6th hourly that too only if fever is more than 100F. I suggest not using combination medicines for fever, especially with Paracetamol.

Cough and cold are viral 95% of the times in children. For cold you can use anti-allergics like cetirizine and for nose block, saline nasal decongestants will do.

Hope my answer was helpful for you. I am happy to help any time. Further clarifications and consultations on Health care magic are welcome. If you do not have any clarifications, you can close the discussion and rate the answer. Wish your kid good health.

What about the Dilo BM syrup and Zyrcold Syrup prescribed by the doctor? Is the prescription and the dosage correct?

Also, what need to be done to have him get fully recover from this continuous sickness and tonsil problem. We have consulted 3-4 doctors and they all are saying that it will improve upon itself as he will grow.

His weight is 17.1 Kg and height is 110 cm, which I think is ok. But his immunity is so week that he get this every month from the last 1.5 years. I have done 6 months antibiotic and anti-allergic treatment and from last 10 months giving him homeopathy through doctors consult. In the last 10 months I have to give him 2-3 times treatment through Antibiotics as fever were high and occurring every 4 hrs after giving Paracetamol. If he drink or eat any cold items he get sicked, so we have stop giving him cold water and ice creams. He is not a good eater too. Never show interest in eating, take lot of times to finish his food. We don't give him chips, occasionally pizzas, cream biscuit and chocos rest we give him what we eat in normal home. Along with food we give him 2.5ml Xtravit z multivitamin syrup twice and also had given him homeopathy alfalfa paediatric tonic.

I along with my wife are very depressed with his current health situation. He has to take 4-5 days leave from school every month and this is affecting his studies. Please help him to get recover fully. Cold and fever 1 or 2 in a year is ok but every month is very disturbing for my child and us also.

Brief Answer:
This is recurrent viral illness - he will grow out of it - dont worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi... I understand your concern. Coming to your queries one by one -

1. You can give Dilo BM syrup and Zyrcold Syrup prescribed by the doctor. It is age appropriate.

2. I do not see the need to use antibiotics like AZEE.

3. Your doctors have been right in saying that he will grow out of the recurrent viral illness problem.

4. Your kid's height and weight is excellent. I have calculated the percentiles of his weight and height. Anything between 5th and 95th percentile is normal. His weight is between 25th to 50th centile and height is between 50th to 75th centile. He is doing well.

5. Recurrent viral illness has got nothing to do with his immunity power. Your child's immunity power is good and the proof of it is his normal height and weight.

6. Next time he gets fever - please get back to me with and I will suggest you what to do. This time we will try without any antibiotics at all.

7. I cannot suggest you on homeopathy treatment as I am an allopathic doctor.

I wish your kid a speedy recovery. If you need any future medical consultation and suggestions, I will be glad to help. You can approach me at the following link.

Thanks doctor but I am unable to visit you as I am too far away from your clinic.

5 days has passed. He is still getting fever and the cold and frequent dry coughing without balgam is still there. He is continuously coughing like kho kho kho and after few minutes again kho-3. The nose is blocked and sometime runny nose. Fever is not high but 100.4 - 100.6 XXXXXXX and we have to give him Crocin DS 5 ml as we do not want it to rise high. We had faced a high fever issue with him when he was 1.5 years old. The fever suddenly raised to 105 due to typhoid.

He is having enlarged glands both side of neck and had tonsillitis problem also
Please suggest.

Brief Answer:
This is recovering viral infection and cough is common - don't worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi.... he is recovering from viral illness. This type of dry cough is common when kid is recovering from viral illness. Right now you can give syrup phenergan at the dose of 5 ml thrice a day for 3 days. But this is a prescription drug so you will need a doctor's prescription for this.
