Suggest Treatment For Persistent Blocked Nose

default
Posted on Sat, 8 Aug 2015
Question: I have been having blocked nose for over 6 months now.
Got into this condition due to continuous use of nasivion nasal drops which worsened the condition.
Due to nasivion, had an internal swelling and internal growth of nasal tissues.
After this I consulted an ENT specialist who suggested me to go for an operation.
A laser driven operation to remove the extra tissue growth.
I also have bone bend in the nose and he said, I can go for removing that bend which can be done along that can improve the condition by creating extra space for breath.

I consulted one more ENT specialist who is against the operation and says my condition cannot improve even with operation and suggested me to use Nasonex a steroid spray for life long.

I am concerned now and don't know what to do.

Please help.

Brief Answer:
can wait before you consider surgery

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome to healthcaremagic,

There are many causes for nose block... allergies, deviated septum, enlarged turbinates, polyps etc. Even long term use of decongestant nose drops like nasivion can also cause nose block.

Before considering surgery, it is important to know the cause for the nose block. Since you have used nose drops, it can also be cause but it is necessary to rule out other causes. This can be done only after examination of your nose. Please meet your doctor again and ask for the cause of the block.

You can use steroid nasal spray. It is generally recommended in people who have nose block due to prolonged decongestant use. Do not hurry and get surgery done. It may not help you if the cause of nose block is allergy or nasivion abuse. Surgery will only help if your nose block is because of a deviated septum or enlarged turbinates.

Thanks for the answer.

Further questions below..

1. How long can I wait before considering surgery?

2. My doctor tells me it is allergy causng the block and to some extent I have a small bend of the nose bone.

3. I have been taking sarpagandha for my sleep problem (can have reserpine chemical in it) http://www.medicinenet.com/reserpine-oral/page2.htm as per this site, it can cause stuffy nose.. could it be the reason for my nose block?

4. Today, I have been diagnised with mild restrictive defect of lung (gone through PFT test). Doctor suggested again one more mouth spray for life long. Is there a way this defect can be cured? rather than using spray life long?

Thanks,

Brief Answer:
not to worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi and very sorry for the delay in the response,

If your doctor has diagnosed your nose complaints as allergy then it can be very easily controlled by steroid nasal spray. There wont be any need for surgery. Some times long standing allergies of the nose can be associated with enlarged turbinates which cause nose block. These enlarged turbinates do not respond fully to steroid nasal spray and may require surgery to correct them. Just follow your doctor's advice.

Reserpine can cause stuffy nose. If your blocked nose has started when you started using reserpine then talk to your doctor and get it changed.

There is no other cure for restrictive lung disease. Please continue the spray suggested by your doctor.

Ok. How safe is it to use nasonex life long?

I am having a bad cough now because of throat infection (I think it is viral infection as the mucus is yellow), pls prescribe a tablet.

Thanks,

Brief Answer:
nasonex is safe

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Nasonex is very safe and can be used for a long time IF INDICATED.

It is unsafe and unwise to take prescriptions online. It is essential to get examined, in your case a lower respiratory tract infection needs to be ruled out. Till you see a doctor you can do steam inhalation 4 times a day and practice voice rest. Remember to drink lots of warm fluids.
