Suggest Treatment For Peripheral Numbness In Limbs, Postpartum Depression And Anxiety Attacks

Posted on Mon, 30 Nov 2015
Question: My daughter-in law has a previous history of post-partm depression and in addition to anxiety attacks is experiencing peripheral numbness in her hands and feet. Is that part of the depression or might it be from an entirely different cause? She has an hour trip to get to a doctor who will take her insurance.

Brief Answer:
Can be associated with depression and anxiety; other causes to be ruled out

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for posting your query in healthcaremagic.com
This is Dr. Swarnava dattagupta answering your query.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.
Post partum depression has various modes of presentation, most commonly being depression, lethargy, hopelessness, social detachment, anxiety, sleep disturbances, loss of appetite etc. It might sometimes present with low energy, bodyache, peripheral numbness etc but one should rule out other probable causes first. Numbness of fingers and toes are most commonly associated with smoking, alcoholism, diabetes, peripheral neuropathy of other causes etc.
Hence one should stop smoking and alcohol intake, get a blood sugar test done and drugs like mecobalamin-pregabalin are very helpful in treating such symptoms.
In addition to it, she should continue with other medicines and therapy for her post partum depression.
You can see a doctor and get her checked clinically, which will soon be done as per your history.

Hope i have answered your question.
If you have any further questions i will be happy to help.
Regards.
