Question: I had recieved a cardiac catheter ablation about 4 months ago and it cured my wolf-parkinson white syndrome correcting the one accessory pathway. Two weeks ago, I had smoked marijuana and had a bad panic attack and ever since ive been experiencing panic attacks some times a couple times a day. I went to get an EKG and it tested normal along with my blood pressure. What should I do?

Brief Answer:
see doctor and counselor

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for consulting us. I am not sure why you started having panic attacks with the marijuana, but it is typical that patients can have some paranoia and anxiety with use of this drug. Panic attacks are a form of anxiety. If it persists you may need to see a doctor and get some medication and/or see a counselor. In the mean time here are some suggestions. Definitely do not use any more marijuana. Avoid alcohol and caffeine use as they can make panic worse. Do not take any kind of stimulant even decongestants. Try to do self calming and self soothing things as much as possible, whatever that is for you. Get outside and go for a walk, eat food that you like, spend time with friends. Do things that make you happy and take your mind off the panic. I hope the panic attacks are gone soon but if they are not be sure to see your doctor.

How can you separate the symptoms of anxiety from heart problems? My heart will race but it seems like it comes and goes and I will feel completely fine a couple of minutes later. I feel like its anxiety because while this is happening I have racing negative thoughts of impending doom and that I going to pass out. But my chest gets really tight and I feel dizzy and disoriented. Other than having the procedure done, My blood work which was tested 5 or 6 months ago proved to be perfectly fine and I have no other known health problems besides occasional seasonal allergies.

Brief Answer:
difficult to separate

Detailed Answer:
Hi, It is very difficult to separate the symptoms of anxiety from the symptoms of heart disease. The cardiologist can do tests to make sure that your heart is working correctly. If they say everything is fine then the symptoms you are having are probably due to anxiety. Then you would need to see a general doctor for treatment suggestions for that. Exercise and counseling can help as well. Remember that anxiety does increase your heart rate so it is not unexpected that you would have heart racing with panic attacks. I hope you are feeling better soon.
