Suggest Treatment For Painful Mouth Ulcer

default
Posted on Fri, 10 Jul 2015
Question: I have a painful ulcer located on the side of my tongue. I have had it there for 2 weeks and it continues to give me pain on and off. My dentist saw it during a routine visit a week ago and asked about it. I told her it had been there for a few days (at that time) and that it hurt. She examined it but did not make a big deal out of it. I have had a few sores like this in the past but never this long. It is white and circular but not raised or dimpled. I do not smoke or chew tobacco and never have. What are your thoughts on this? Is this something I should have examined, and, if so, which type of doctor would be the best to visit? Thanks for your help!

Brief Answer:
not to worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome to healthcaremagic,

Oral ulcers are very common. They can occur due to viral infections, sharp teeth , ill fitting dentures, bad oral hygiene, vitamin deficiencies, trauma to the oral mucosa, and many other causes. Many times it is very difficult to ascertain the exact cause.

These ulcers heal on their own and no treatment is usually required. Symptomatic treatment is sufficient. For the pain you can take pain killers like ibuprofen or paracetamol. You can apply lignocaine based gels directly over the ulcer like Smyle gel. These pain killer gels should be applied 20 minutes before eating food. Also use chlorhexidene mouth wash 3 times a day to improve oral hygiene. You can also take multivitamin capsules for 15 days.

If the ulcer fails to heal in the next few days then see a doctor.
