Suggest Treatment For Painful Meniscus Tear

Posted on Tue, 29 Mar 2016
Question: I twisted my knee 6 months ago getting off of my horse. Immediate swelling but no bruising. It was extremely painful for about a month, however the pain never completely went away. I went to my pcp and he recommended an MRI and said it sounded like a meniscus tear. After he manipulated the joint it has been extremely painful. What should I expect from here?

Brief Answer:
May need surgical repair.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
A meniscus tear that is 6 months old and is still painful may need a surgical repair. You need to consult an orthopedician with MRI scan for proper treatment. Avoid any weight bearing on the knee and strenuous knee exercises like jogging or climbing stairs or squatting. You can use a knee brace till then for an added relief.
I hope this answers your query.

Ok. What is the most common type of surgical repair for someone of my age? I am extremely active. I know there are different types. My goal is to have a bit of an idea when I do finally get in with an orthopedic specialist.

Brief Answer:
An arthroscopic repair would be best for you.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
An arthroscopic meniscal repair is preferred. Rest depends on the type and extent of the meniscal tear.
