default
Posted on Mon, 3 Aug 2015
Question: My son aged 9 years, developed a ear pain last night. First he said his left ear seems to be suddenly closed as it water is clogged and he could hear himself. Its only in his left ear. After about an hour he started developing pain. I applied warm press almost about an hour which revileved him temporarily,
Then I had a paracetemol - dart 300 mg. I gave him half the tablet anc continuied the warm press, after which he could sleep. Its earlymorning now, though he is not awake, i see him quite distrurbed in his sleep, keeping his hand near the same ear.
I Wanted to know anything to releive his pain and cure this. Is it a infection, if yes, how did he catch up? or is it a onset of cold attack.? Any tablets / drops I can pick up from pharmacy.
Also a point - when i looked inside his ear, i could see some wax..(not very solid though but oilish) which appeared normal only to me, LEt me know if I should be looking for anything more.

Brief Answer:
Acute serous otitis media

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

It looks like your child is suffering from serous otitis media, which is a common infection in chilren. Here is what you should do

1. Hot fomentation of the face three times daily
2. Tab Ciprofolxacin can be given twice daily for 5 days
3. No ear drops will be helpful for this condition
4. Do not allow water to enter the ear canal
5. Paracetamol is a good enough tablet for the pain, it can be taken three times daily ( 250 mg )
6. I strongly recommend you to see an ENT as soon as possible as this can sometime lead to permanent hearing loss

I hope I was of help,, if you have any further queries please get back to me
