Question: Hello, last night I got hit pretty hard with a fast flying tennis ball in my upper chest on the left side. I thought nothing of it even though it hurt. Today, I am in a lot of pain, it hurts to take a deep breath even. Do I need an x-ray? Is my lung bruised? Please advise.

Brief Answer:
Various possibilities narrated, get pain relief first then x-ray later on .

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear
I evaluated your query thoroughly .
* Tennis ball is air filled & has flexible febric over rubber cover .
Type of injury depend upon the impact from speed of it
* Possibilities of pain are related to
- hematoma formation - ligament sprain / strain - costochondral
- rib / cartilage / sternum / intercostal muscle , nerve damage
- lung contusion
* All other conditions than lung injury also give rise to pain on deep breath due
to variety of mechanisms , you should not panic at present about lung bruise
* My recommendations for you at present
- local analgesic spray application every 8 hourly
- alternate application of ice pack and heating pad will give much better relief
for pain
- prefer semi reclining position during rest
- avoid weight lifting / strenuous work / smoking if doing
- tab. tylenol (500) mg 3 times a day after meals give better analgesia
- maintain hydration with plenty of liquids
- take an x-ray once pain is settled for around half level also , to rule out
any underlying insult through tennis ball
* Certain questions herewith for you
1. exact area on left upper chest in relation to collar bone & breast
2. any changes noted in overlying skin as warm, red
3. noticeable swelling above the skin surface
4. breathing pattern
5. body temperature change if any
