Suggest Treatment For Pain In The Toes

Posted on Thu, 13 Oct 2016
Question: My big toe hurts on the inside side only but it doesn't seem to be red or swollen. What could it be? I do wear compression stockings and run a business so I am on my feet all day. I thought it might be my shoes but the toe does seem to have plenty of room. At night when I remove the compression stockings and go to bed bare foot, there is no sensation of pain.

Doctor's reply to your question above...
Brief Answer:
? nerve compression by compression stockings

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Read the history carefully and understood your concerns.

The catch: is in the removal of the compression stocking and the pain is gone when you go to the bed barefoot as also the localized nature without redness or swelling.

It seems that the nerve supplying that particular area is compressed by the compression stockings. Change the settings or do not use the stockings for a day and see if the pain recurs.
This will be diagnostic as well as therapeutic.

I hope this answers your query.
Please give feedback. Any further query is most welcome.

Yes this did help and seems to have cured that problem. What can I do to stop wearing these compression stockings completely? They seem to help my CVI but do create other problems with my feet and toes which I didn't have before. What specific exercises would help? Is there a total cure for my CVI?

Brief Answer:
CVI can be treated with surgery or lifestyle modifications

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
prolonged standing can cause CVI. If you have problem with stocking you can try a loose stocking then previous one. Some time changing brand can also help. If stocking does not help then lifestyle modification like avoid prolong standing can help.
Last option is we have to think of surgery. It is small surgical procedure that can cure CVI.
I hope this answers your query.Let me know if there is any other followup questions.

When you say a small surgical procedure that can cure CVI, what exactly does that mean? Is a hospital stay required? How long will it tie me up? Any possible complications? My legs do not get tired now, but will they after the procedure? Is my diet creating this condition? Should I exercise my legs by taking long walks or riding a bicycle? Please let me know what else I can do. I am not a couch potato so I can't see myself sitting around all day.

Thank you, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Laser surgery can be done for CVI

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
In those cases where veins are dilated even when patient is lying down and there is severe tiredness in legs, surgery is indicated. There are various type of surgeries available for CVI.Recent advances involve laser ablation of dilated veins or sclerotherapy or endoscopic treatment. You can be discharged on same day. Though walking may be delayed for three to four days.
There is not severe complication but some hematoma or swelling in leg is possible. You are allowed to do exercises and walking but do not stand at same place for long time. Also keep on moving your ankle so your calf muscles work as pump to push blood above.
Thanks
