Suggest Treatment For Pain In The Calf Area

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Sep 2015
Question: I went to urgent care because of moderate pain in calf area and dr. suspected a blood clot. ER dr. bent my ankle and said "No clot". Ortho dr. said "runner's knee." This morning I thought my leg was swollen, measured it and circumference is one inch bigger on that leg than the other one. Don't want to be the old lady who runs to ER all the time, but would not like to die of blood clot. What should I do?

Brief Answer:
You should get a lower limb doppler ultrasound study done

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have carefully gone through the details provided. You need a systematic approach. First of all you need to get a lower limb doppler study done. If your problems are due to a blood clot, it would get clearly identified. In such a case, taking suitable medicines like clopidogrel will prevent further clots from developing and therefore you no longer need to worry about dying from a blood clot. See a doctor.

On the other hand, if no clots or vascular abnormalities are detected on the doppler, then there is possibly some other underlying factor. Electrolyte imbalance could be a possible cause and needs to be checked for. Taking juicy fruits like citrus fruits should provide relief in case it is due to electrolyte imbalance.

In any case, hot compress alternating with cold compress should provide relief.
Hope that helps.

Lower limb Doppler studies are usually not done at emergency rooms. Rather, they are done in radiological centres with facility of ultrasound and doppler studies.

Went to ER and had Doppler study done - no blood clot - Elevate and drink fruit juice and take Advil. Thank you for your help. No definitive answers, but I'm chugging orange juice until I see my Dr.

You were a big help. Thank you.
