Suggest Treatment For Pain In The Abdominal Region

Question: Hello, Recently, I have started a new job, driving for job training an hour and a half both ways and wearing a belt with dress pants. I am overweight, and when I sit at the computer for 8 hours on the job, the belt digs into my stomach (upper left part because I wear my pants higher) when I drive and when i bend forward to work on my computer. I do not notice this when I stand or move around, just when I sit. At first, because I have stretch marks on my stomach, they would dig into where I have stretch marks, making feel like a little pinch. I stopped wearing the belt yesterday, now it just feels a little sore in that spot. On a scale of 1-10, it feels like a 2 or 3. I have no nausea, indigestion, or problems with my bowel movements. What can I do to alleviate this problem? Thanks!

Brief Answer:
Ibuprofen and acetaminophen tablets and consultation if no improvement

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for asking at HCM.
I carefully read your question and understand your concern.

The pain you are feeling is due to the trauma of the belt on your abdomen. The skin is the first layer that is generally hurt and I would expect the pain is due to the pressure over the skin.

You do not have any problems with bowel, no indigestion problems, no nausea so it seems your intestines and stomach are well.

Abdominal organs that can be damaged by trauma are the liver and the spleen that are mostly at the sides of the abdomen but they tent to be hurt by major trauma like accidents and I would not expect them to be affected by just the pressure of the belt.

The pain you are feeling is very mild and not necessarily you need treatment. It should normally subside in a few days. The most important treatment here is prevention of furhter trauma so it is good you are avoiding the belt.

To help with the pain, if needed, I would say you can use some acetaminophen 500 mg every 6 hours and if this does not help you enough than I would use Ibuprofen up to 800 mg together with the acetaminohen 500 mg 3 times a day. Take it after food becaue ibuprofen might hurt your stomach.

If the pain is not improving in a few days or it gets any worse you will need to see a doctor. Other causes of the pain should be considered and investigated in this case.

I hope this is helpful and answers to your question.

Kind regards,

Dr Antoneta Zotaj
