Posted on Wed, 4 Feb 2015
Question: Hi Dr. XXXXXXX

I am writing this query on behalf of my mom. She is facing a problem from quite a long time now. She has got a corn in her left foot. Its like a round pattern skin has bulged out of the flat surface of the foot just below the fingers. Its been more than a year that she has this problem. She has operated and removed the bulged part twice but it occurs again after 4 to 5 months.

She found it difficult to walk or stand due to pain.

Can you please suggest what treatment should be taken for the permanent cure of this problem ? Any specialist that we should consider ?

Brief Answer:
Surgical removal and prevention

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

Thanks for writing to me.

Corn is known to recur after removal. The treatment for it is mainly surgical removal and preventing it to recur. The cause of recurrence are constant pressure over the area or incomplete removal. If adequate precautions taken recurrence can be prevented.

There are no specific specialist for this disease. Any experienced general surgeon will be fine to consult.

I suggest the following for your mother
- Ask her to wear soft sole shoes or footwear.
- avoid wearing heals or hard footwear.
- See to it that shoes or footwear won't cause pressure on the foot at the corn site.
- wear cotton socks with the footwear.
- daily application of moisturizing cream to the foot to keep it soft.
- footwear, you may take according to the need and pressure required after consulting the doctor.

These above mentioned things are to prevent further recurrence. For now as she is having corn, it needs to be removed. Complete excision is needed.

Hope I have answered your query. If any further queries are there I would love to help.
