default
Posted on Thu, 15 Jun 2017
Question: Hello Doctor,
For a week or so I am experiencing pain immediately below the right rib cage. There is no pain while doing normal activities but if I try to do pull ups or raise my hand straight up, I experience pain just below the right rib cage. I exercise regularly. I am not sure if this is something relating to a muscle pull or something due to exercise or some other medical condition. please advise. Thank you

Brief Answer:
Costochondritis should be considered as first diagnosis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query, albeit short and specific.
Pain just below the right rib cage only on doing pull ups or raising the hand straight up indicates that this is either muscle strain and/or costochondritis.
I would advise you the following in such a condition as per the history you have provided:
Stop doing any activity that instigate or enhance the pain - for rest purpose; this itself may be sufficient for alleviating your problems.
You may take an anti-inflammatory if there is any swelling and/pain or local tenderness.
You may apply any rubefacient liniment or ointment to be applied locally for pain relief and thus alleviating spasm.

I hope this answer helps you, please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communication.
