Suggest Treatment For Pain And Swelling In The Feet

default
Posted on Thu, 2 Feb 2017
Question: I have just recovered from Ebstein-Barr virus that I contracted in the middle of last May 2015. I have tender ankle joints and some swelling and my feet hurt. I followed the directions of my GP MD and rested most of the time, drank a lot of water and stopped drinking alcohol --(1.5 drinks a day). I am a 67 year old mail in good health. I am recovered from Ebstein-Barr says my MD. BUT I have never really revovered from tender ankles and hurting feet completely. Out of the blue about 3 weeks ago I woke up one morning and BOTH knees were hurting--no swelling but painful and very stiff. Painful enough that I have had to cancel my normal daily walking of approx. one hour. My knees now hurt most of the time and after sitting or inactivity they become very stiff and have to walk almost stiff legged for a minute or two. I take ibuprofen PM to help me sleep and that helps to reduce the pain in the evening and most of the next morning. Now let me add this to your information --I quite using Bio-Identical Hormone Replacements "testosterone pellets" approx. 2 months ago. I was having them inserted in my butt approx. every 5 months so its been approx. 7 months since I last had them inserted. Not sure they have anything to do with my knee and ankle joint pain--BUT I don't know what else it could be. There was no physical damage of any kind--just pain starting in both knees one morning--with light pain still remaining in my ankles and feet--any ideas???

Brief Answer:
I think it was the viral infection that left you with joint swellings

Detailed Answer:
Hi welcome to HCM,
I think it was the viral infection that left you with joint swellings and pain.
It can happen with all viruses although commoner with Chikungunya.
I do not think it is the testosterone.
A short tapering course of corticosteroids to my mind is the answer.
It is not a good idea to take ibuprofen regularly. It can damage the kidneys.
While taking steroids, your blood pressure and blood sugar will need to be monitored.
Please discuss this with your MD/PCP. Regards
