Suggest Treatment For Pain And Muscle Spasms In The Legs
Question: Last February, I had venus oblation done on my right leg. At times, in the middle of
the night or early in the morning, I have pain and uncontrolled contractions of the
muscles in my rt. leg. I have to get up and walk and force the bending of the feet
as I stand and/or walk. Is this normal and is it related to the rt. leg venous oblation
of last year?

Hello and thank you for your question. I carefully read your query. Welcome to HCM.
If the older, although successful, procedures for treating varicose veins would have been performed, such as saphenous vein stripping, these complaints would actually lead us to put the procedure in the differential diagnosis. However, the nouvelle techniques, such as endovenous ablation with lasr or radiofrequency, have provided a substantial benefit in this regard. Therefore, my opinion is that these complaints are not coming as a result of the procedure.
This may come also from various physiological reasons. The aging process may cause some eletrolytic disturbances. Also, being diagnosed once with varicose veins, there is a possibility for the new ones to be formed, although not in such a short time. However, due to these suspicions, I would recommend you to undergo two tests:
- a blood electrolyte levels, calcium in particular, lower than normal levels of which may cause involuntary muscle contractions or twitching, accompanied with pain in a certain area
- echo Doppler study of the superficial and deep veins on your leg.
