Suggest Treatment For Osteoarthritis Of The Shoulder

Question: Dear Dr. Do you know why my arms would ache? I went to a Chiropractor because my shoulder hurt because I came up the basement stairs and slipped and crashed into the wall. Fine but the Chiropractor helped my shoulder and then proceeded to feel the need to take my arms around my back and extend them to my opposite ear. And then he told me I think I have the start of arthritis and kept doing it with every visit. Ever since then I've had arm aches especially when waking up or relaxing in my chair. Do you think he could have done something with my nerves or muscles? I'm glad I quit going.

Also I'm having problems with digestion. I'm going for a swallow test on April 13. I feel like food gets stuck all the time and I have to vomit to get it out. Man it's great getting old. I'm 61. Thanks for your advise. Ramona

Brief Answer:
Possible osteoarthritis of shoulder, need to rule our injury

Detailed Answer:
Hello Ramona,
Thank you for trusting HealthcareMagic

Since you are experiencing pain in the morning after waking up, osteoarthritis of the shoulder joint is a possible diagnosis. However, since you have a history of fall with impact on your shoulder, it is important to rule out any injury to shoulder joint including injury to bones, muscles or tendons. Sometimes an underlying injury can also be the cause of arthritis.
A thorough physical examination and imaging studies (X-ray, MRI scan) is required to come to a definite diagnosis.

Please follow up with an orthopedician/ Primary care physician to get the necessary evaluation done.

Meanwhile, give adequate rest to affected shoulder, apply cold compress to relieve pain and take Tylenol(if not allergic) for pain. Ibuprofen is a better pain killer, but I recommend Tylenol for you because Ibuprofen can aggravate gastrointestinal problems.

Hope I was able to answer your question
