Suggest Treatment For Obesity

Question: Good afternoon,

Starting XXXXXXX 5th, I will have an entire month and a half to myself to try and ease down on the eating, and pick up the exercising. I live with my grandparents, so dieting is tough, since they are always checking to see if you're hungry, lol.

On a serious note though, I am 19 years old, and I weigh 270-280. I am aware that I am very obese, but id definitely like to change that. Although I am obese, a nurse (about a month ago) said that my lungs and heart are working fine, and I am. healthy individual.

The question I would like to ask is what physical activity can you recommend that won't push the bill? I would just run around alot, but I definitely don't want to possibly put my health at risk.

Unfortunately, I am so busy, that I won't be able to see a doctor for face to face advice, so this would be next in line.

--------

Little more info: There is a ton of space to jog and run. In late XXXXXXX ill have access to a fitness center. Then a big open field for activities.

I will definitely ease down on the food during this time, but I am worried about the physical activity.
Forgot one thing.

19 years old, 5 foot 8, and 270-280 lbs

Brief Answer:
About obesity treatment;

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for asking!

I can understand your concern and congratulate you for the decision you have made to lose weight.

Your BMI is approximately 42, so the obesity is of concern as you are only 19 years old.

To loose weight would help; restriction of calorie intake, physical activity and there are 4 classes (FDA approved) of medications that help in losing weight. Of course, an endocrinologist would describe them. If they fail, surgical procedures to reduce the stomach are suggested.

If you can not see a physician, I would recommend;

Physical activity such as running ( as it is more practical for you) starting 30 min/ day, 5 times in a week and increasing it progressively 10 min/ week.

You do not have to be afraid, your health is not put at risk by running.
As you mentioned you have done a medical control and have not cardiac/ pulmonary pathologies. So keep increasing the physical activity.

Reduce the carbohydrates and fat from the diet, substituting them with proteins.
A dietitian would be of help to give you a personalized diet.

Of course, you can reach your goal but the difficulty will be in maintaining the normal weight throughout your life.

Many obese people fail and are constructed to do gastric surgery.

I wish you the best in reaching your goals and not get back to the previous situation.

Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta
