Brief Answer:
As you explain it sounds like Shingles infection (varicella zoster)

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for asking at HCM.
I carefully read your question and understand your concern.

If you are having the knee pain with the neurological symptoms like numbness and some rash on the same area the first thing that comes to a doctor mind as a very likely cause of it is Shingles. This is a viral infection that "sleeps" in the nerve endings in our body and might travel through the nerve and cause infection of the skin the nerve inervates causing pain and rash.

Having some pictures of the rash would be very helpful. It generally can be in red papules and plaques and also develops vesicles on it (small fluid filled lesions). You can simply upload/attach some snapshots of the affected area at the reports section so that I can have a closer look at them.

In young healthy people it is gerneally self limiting and might take around 2 weeks for the rash to settle down and you to feel much better.

Ibuprofen in high doses (600-800 mg after food 3 times a day) for 2-3 days, with paracetamol might be helpful for the pain. In some patients the specific treatment with antiviral like Acyclovir is needed but i would say it is unlikely it is needed in you if you do not have other medical conditions or using steroids daily.

Cold compresses might help with the "burning" sensation it might be causing.

Please fill free to send me the pictures of the rash if you would like more clarifications.

I hope this is helpful to you and I wish you will get better soon.
Feel free to ask further.

Kind Regards,

Just sent three pictures. He says the bumps itch but are not painful. He power lifts, so originally, 4 days ago, we thought it was a sprained knee because the pain started in the knee, then numbness began radiating over the past few days, and knee still hurts. Now the bumps are spreading slowly over past 2 days.

Sounds like you are on track, but I wanted to clarify that the knee pain and numbness were the main complaint, and the bumps may be related..

Brief Answer:
It seems like Shingles

Detailed Answer:
Hello again.

The rash seems like Shingles. They are small red areas close together.

It is good the are not so tender themselves. Please do not scratch them as this might help them spread.

It takes around 2 weeks for the rash to fade and pain might go on longer as the affected nerve needs time to regenerate.

I wish you quick healing.

Kind Regards

Dr Antoneta
