Suggest Treatment For Night Time Cough And Nasal Blockage

Question: Hi Doctor, My son is 7 months old and weighs 8.5 kg. For the last 5 days he is having cough and now it increased during nights and he is also having nose blockage. One week back he was administered Vaxigrip(influenza vaccine) and Hep B vaccine. Are the cold and cough are side effects of these vaccines?
Please let me know what medication to use for this condition.

Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
Both the Vaccines you had mentioned do not produce any cold or cough. The current symptoms are not related to these Vaccines.
Cold and cough is usually viral infection at this age.
For nose block I usually prescribe nasal saline drops one drop each nose before feeding which might help in relieving the obstruction.

For cough ambroxol drops like mucolite is what I give at around 0.5 ml thrice daily to my patients in my clinic.
Antibiotics are not required usually.

If cough worsens you need to consult your pediatrician.

Thanks Doctor for the reply. Currently we are using Maxtra. Shall we stop it and use Mucolite?

You can add mucolite.
Maxtra for cold and mucolite is for cough

Hi Doctor, thanks for the reply. For the last 2 days we are giving Maxtra and cold. Also we observed that he is getting more cough when breast feeded. Just FYI, his elder brother is allergic to milk and we use levolin nebulizer when he gets cough and wheezing.
1. How can we check whether the little one also have allergy to milk?
2. The little one is also having slight wheezing today, so shall we give levolin nebulization to him?

IgE milk

Detailed Answer:
1. You can get IgE specific for milk. This is a blood test to identify milk allergy.
2. No. Avoid nebulisations at home without oxygen. At this age it is better to nebulise after confirming with your doctor. It is risky to nebulise without examination by your doctor.
