Posted on Mon, 27 Jul 2015
Question: Im a 40yr old male with spinabifida and a neurogenic bladder. I've been catherizing myself all my life and have had difficulty getting my catheter into my bladder. I saw a urologist yesterday who said my prostate is the size of a walnut and when he tried catherizing he felt the blockage and said he needed to put a bag on me. he also said I had a bladder infection with two kinds of bacteria in it and put me on cipro 500mg twice daily. all day Ive felt irritated down there and my prostate has been very sore, uncomfortable and bothersome. will having a bad on help drain the infection? and is the way my prostate is feeling natural because of having the bag on? also with what I explained. before what's my chances of having either bladder and or prostate cancer? I'm also really burning down below

bag is temporary. don't worry about cancer.

Hello XXXX and welcome to HCM.
The bag is only a temporary step, till the infection clears. After that the block can be cleared and the bag is removed. The pain will gradually decrease.

the pressure where my prostate is is the most bothersome. with my prostate being slightly enlarged and the catheter in me, can the catheter be the cause of the prostate pressure?

Answered by Dr. Matthew J. Mangat (55 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
The pain over prostate will decrease gradually.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again.
As the block is at the level of the prostate, that's the area, where pain and discomfort will be most. That decreases over a few days.
The bag should be emptied every 3-4 hours, otherwise the weight of the urine in bag may cause a discomfort.
Feel free to contact me anytime.

Brief Answer:
you're welcome.

Detailed Answer:
It's good you reported this.
Always keep an eye on the urine draining in the bag.
If you see the urine flow is blocked, it will cause a swelling in lower part of your abdomen and bag will be empty.
Remain alert and in good health.

had another bag blockage, this time nusre was unable to irrigate it so she was able to change complete catheter. after almost 2 weeks of being on 500mg cipro my urine is still very concentrated. I am drinking lots of water , cranberry juice and juices. what could be reasons my urine is still concentrated. could it be kidney issues?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Matthew J. Mangat (1 hour later)
Brief Answer:
maintain about 10 glasses liquids daily.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again.
I can understand your concern, as you've been on a catheter for a long time.
Well catheters do get blocked often. As and when they get blocked, first an irrigation is tried to clear it, and if it fails, a new catheter is placed.
You're lucky the nurse could place a new catheter. Now, the Cipro may be stopped.
You need to take about 10 glasses of liquids daily.( including water ).
If you drink less liquids, urine will get concentrated and vice-versa.Don't keep looking at the color of the urine.
Hope your doubts are cleared. Feel free to contact me anytime.
Wishing you good health.

Im suppose to continue cipro until empty which is another 4 days. I looked online and concentrated urine could be caused by heart failure. what are signs of that

Brief Answer:
follow your doctors' advice.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again.
As you may be knowing, doctors follow different protocols. So follow what your doctor advises.
Don't keep looking at the net for whatever doubts you have, as you'll get more confused. If you really did have concentrated urine, your doctor wouldve observed it and advised steps to correct it.
Don't worry and enjoy good health.
