Question: I am 70 yrs. old, in good general health I started symptoms last night. Neck pain up the back and base of skull. Headache, stiff neck, swollen lymph nodes in neck, chest aches, and hurts to take a deep breath Joints are painful, my hands and shoulders especially. I have arthritis, normally well controlled by aspirin. No fever. I have had several Mosquito bites this year, could this be West Nile?

Brief Answer:
it could be

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

the patients who develop symptoms when contracting the West Nile virus usually develop a mild illness with symptoms like the ones you've mentioned. More serious symptoms usually indicate meningitis or encephalitis with high fever, intense headache and neurological symptoms.

The tough part in your case is that these symptoms are common among many viral diseases, so distinguishing between them is not easy. Stiff neck is a symptom that raises concerns for central nervous system involvement, so you'd better visit your doctor for assessment.

I hope you find my comments helpful!
Kind Regards!
