Question: I woke up with nausea and the room is spinning. This is causing me to want to throw up. I've had some pretty bad headaches over the past few days. Other than that, I am fine. I take Levoxyl for my Hypothyroidism but that is the only medication.

Brief Answer:
different possible causes

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

When the room feels as though it is spinning or a person feels as though they are spinning, it is called vertigo.

There are different causes for vertigo but it is most commonly related to the inner ear which plays a big role in balance.

There are causes other than the inner ear as well such as a vestibular migraine where the symptoms occur in persons with a history of migraine. Also very rarely can be associated with lesions of the brain or nerves in the brain- not as common as inner ear causes.

Inner ear causes include- (1) vestibular neuronitis- this is most common of the inner ear causes, there may be a recent history of an infection. The vertigo lasts for hours at a time.

Medications such as dramamine (would also reduce the nausea), antivert, valium etc can be used for a few days to help reduce symptoms.

(2)BPPV- stands for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. Episodes get worse with certain head positions eg if holding to one particular side etc. Episodes lasts seconds to few minutes

Treated with a maneuver called Epley's maneuver which is demonstrated online and also with short term use of the meds mentioned

(3)meniere's disease- episodes last for minutes. Associated with hearing loss and tinnitus (hearing noises in the ear like ringing or buzzing)

It would be best to be seen if possible, to determine the exact cause. If this is not an option then you can use one of the meds mentioned.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
