Suggest Treatment For Nasal Congestion And Severe Cough

default
Posted on Wed, 20 Apr 2016
Question: Hello,
I am almost 70 years of age. I have had congestion and a little coughing at night. When I wake up, I have nasal congestion and some coughing. Only clear mucous, nasal and cough. When I lay down at night is when I am the worst. I can hear noises( wheezing, bubbly,) in my chest when I breathe out. I am breathing normal with some shortness of breath. I breath through my mouth when my nasal passage stops up. Mostly one nostril stays stopped up. I'll feel pretty good during the day, until I lay down then it starts over again.
Can you please advise me.

Brief Answer:
Possibility of acute bronchitis is more.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Possibility of acute bronchitis is more.
Most common cause for this is viral infection.
Along with antibiotic drug, you need to do following things for better symptomatic relief.
1. Drink plenty of fluids orally and keep yourself hydrated.
2. Do steam inhalation and warm water gargles 5-6 times a day.
3. Start antihistamines and anti inflammatory drugs.
4. Inhaled treatment is best for bronchitis. So start inhaled bronchodilators and inhaled corticosteroid (ICS).
Don't worry, you will be alright with all these.
Please let me know if you are having any allergies.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.

I am not sure if its allergies or not. I have 3 laying hens and it seems to me that since I got them. I seem to have more trouble breathing at night. After I've fed and water the hens. Could that be an allergy?

Never smoked.
No hypertension. I have a mitral value prolapse diagnose many years ago. Haven't had any problems with it. The doctors said a lot of people don't even know they had or have the problem.

I think I will go get my heart checked out. That's a concern now, that you mentioned it. If its my heart, would I get congestion and cough up just a little clear mucous. I don't go to the doctor very often. Maybe twice in six or seven years.

Brief Answer:
Better to get done ecg and 2d echo.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Yes, you should definitely get done ecg and 2d echo to rule out heart diseases because your age is also more than 60 years.
Yes, heart diseases can cause chest congestion and coughing up of clear mucus.
So get done heart reports.
If these reports are normal then bronchitis is more likely.
And for this inhaled treatment is best treatment. So start inhaled bronchodilators and inhaled corticosteroid (ICS).
Oral antihistamine and anti inflammatory drugs are also useful along with doxycyclin.
So consult your doctor and discuss all these.
