Suggest Treatment For Minor Head Injury
Question: I got up to close the window and got back to bed and my husband had his elbow up and i bumped the right side bottom of my head on his elbow - could that cause any problems? I read on the computer it could cause a concussion? Is that true?

Head trauma can be mild or severe.
In severe cases, it is obvious that imaging such as a CT needs to be done.
In some mild cases there are criteria which are used to determine if a person needs a CT to take a look at the brain.
This is not necessary for all mild head trauma and may not be needed.
The criteria is called the New Orleans criteria. If any person with mild head trauma has the following imaging is needed:
(1) headache
(2)vomiting
(3)age greater than 60
(4)seizures
(5)history of alcohol or drug use
(6)memory loss
(7)visible trauma above the clavicle
A concussion is associated with these symptoms: memory loss, loss of consciousness, headache, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, drowsiness, confusion
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms then you should be evaluated to determine if there is any significant head injury. In addition, your doctor may suggest a CT scan of the brain.
In mild concussion the main treatment is monitoring and pain meds for any discomfort
In severe cases more intervention is needed.
