Suggest Treatment For Mild Hydronephrosis In The Left Kidney
Question: I have in left kidney mild hydronephrosis and hydroureter noted with a 7 to 8mm calculus in distal VUJ what treatment is recommended.

From the information given, the best option for you would be to have surgery in the form of ureteroscopy and fragmentation of stone. The stone can be broken down by LASER or by a machine called lithoclast.
7-8 mm stone can pass by itself in 20-30% of patients. I, for my patients decide whether to allow the stone by pass by itself only if patient is totally against surgery or high risk for surgery and if the pain is under control. Surgery is a quicker way of relieving the patient of the stone. I then place them on a tablet called tamsulosin and painkillers.
However if you have urine infection, or if kidney function is impaired (blood test called creatinine) then i would opt for surgery directly rather than waiting.
