Suggest Treatment For Mild Deviated Nasal Septum

default
Posted on Fri, 3 Jul 2015
Question: I have mild Deviated Nasal Septum. C Shaped right nostril.
It never created any trouble. Just from February 2014 I had dry cough which is consistent. Consulted with ENT and found I have DNS.
Now I have really sore throat with Grannular Pharyngitis which is persistent. I am very tired with this irritation at back of the throat. I had Sinus infection on Sept 2014 during CT Scan found Sinus infection and congestion along with swelled nasal turbinate. With course of antibiotic it became ok. But I was on Memoflo nasal spray for long.
My question:
If I have mild DNS, which has got little obstruction for breathing at one nostril. Can it cause sore throat and grannular pharyngitis?
I am filling mucus at back of the throat, is it PND?
What can be my further treatment?

Is there possibility of some other reason behind the symptoms?

You can understand I am tackling it continuously since last 1.5 years.

Brief Answer:
DNS can cause recurrent sore throat...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting the query.

1. Unilateral nasal block can cause recurrent sore throat. People with unilateral nasal obstruction may end up with bilateral nasal obstruction while lying down. This leads to mouth breathing, drying of the throat and sore throat. You only have mild DNS and it should not cause one time episode, though it may have been a risk factor.

2. Another reason could be Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR). A silent reflux of acid contents from the stomach into the throat causing recurrent sore throat and PND.

3. Filling of mucus behind the throat is PND, this can happen both with sinusitis as well as LPR.

4. Try doing steam inhalation, drinking lots of warm water, using saline nasal spray for clearing the nasal secretions and proton pump inhibitors if there is LPR.

5. Avoid chilled food and beverages/coffee/fizzy drinks/smoking.

Hope I have answered your query; I'll be available for the follow up queries.

I don't have any problem with acid reflux. I have the following problems
1. Everyday morning nose full of dry crust.
2. Uneasiness at the back of nose.
3. Sometimes breathing problem with nose.
4. Sometimes minor earache.
5. Earache during flight takeoff and landing.
6. Pnd continuously.
7. My dns visible from outside. I am attaching photograph.
8. I had sinus infection 8 months back. Which gone after medication. But still having facial pain and headache sometimes. Though not severe. During sinus did ct scan and shows dns and sinus cavity congestion and congested turbunator.
9. My persistent granular pharyngitis is really bothering me. Before I never had much problem, at least I did not notice.

What is u r opinion?

Brief Answer:
People with LPR will not perceive the actual symptoms of acidity...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for writing back

1. Early morning congestion and dryness of the nose is due to nasal block and stagnation of the secretions in the nasal cavity followed by mouth breathing.

2. Uneasiness at the back of the nose is because of the mouth breathing. The latter dries up the secretions in the throat, making it sore. The soreness can be referred to the back of the nose.

3. Breathing problem is due to nasal block and clogged secretions.

4. Earache is because of the blockage of the Eustachian tube (the tube connecting nose and the ear). This does worsen during the flight journey because of the change in the pressure relative to the altitude of the flight.

6. Please check the following links for more details regarding your problem. http://www.entnet.org/content/post-nasal-drip
http://my.clevelandclinic.org/services/head-neck/diseases-conditions/hic-laryngopharyngeal-reflux-lpr

7. I have examined the images thoroughly and I could notice a mild hump over the dorsum of the left side of the nose. But, I am sorry I can't comment on the nasal deviation inside the nose, because I can't see it from outside. The quantum of deviation can be best assessed by the anterior rhinoscopy and nasal endoscopy.

8. If you could post the images of the CT scan I can help you in a better way. Steam inhalation and saline nasal spray can reduce the nasal congestion and clear the sinus secretions.

9.As I mentioned in the previous post, the recurrent pharyngitis could be either due to the sinusitis or laryngo-pharyngeal reflux. Once the triggering factor is taken care of the symptoms stop automatically.

Hope this clarifies your doubts.
