Question: My 36-year old daughter was diagnosed with bipolar disease (schizophrenic-affective), alcoholism, bulimia, obsessive-compulsive behaviors, and recently has been suffering migraine headaches. After an MRI, the nurse told her to not cancel this appointment because some degenerative indicators were noticeable. She has also had mild memory problems. She has to write out statements before beginning a phone conversation with professionals. Her current psychiatrist has prescribed about 20 medications to take care of the violent temper, anger, and various side effects of those drugs. She refuses to go to her primary care doctor to discuss those medications. She has been overcome with the need to sleep while standing at the sink cutting up vegetables. Her 8-year old daughter was unable to wake her up. She also has a 5-year-old and a two-year-old. What can I do as her mother? Her husband is walking on eggshells now to just keep the peace and marriage intact.

Brief Answer:
Be strong, ask for God's help, and other advice as following...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I am really sorry for the situation your daughter is in. From what you are describing, she really needs professional help.

1. To begin, I advise to talk with her psychiatrist for a possibility to get her hospitalized until her mental status will be improved.

2. If you cannot manage to hospitalize her, please try to discuss with her psychiatrist to schedule appointment for psycho-therapy. It will help her get out of her current mental status.

3. I also advise to discuss with her husband to try to find out the medications she has been prescribed by psychiatrist, and get them checked by her primary without letting her know.

4. Be close to her, try to show her your love. Helping her with house cores or taking care of her children will also help her not to get stressed and try to relax and overcome the actual problems.

5. It is adorable what you intend to do and what her husband is doing to keep the peace and marriage intact. Asking for God's guidance is essential in overcoming this situation.

All the best and God bless!
