Suggest Treatment For Metastatic Breast Cancer

Posted on Thu, 26 Feb 2015
Question: I am currently taking Arimdex and Falsodex for treatment of metastic breast cancer and peritoneal cancer as result of the breast cancer. With falsodex my tumor markers have been going up slowly for a couple months, dr. suggested another scan. I had one on Oct. 22, showed no progression same as scan before. Then doctor wanted to give me chemotherapy, but wanted another scan before he changed direction on the treatment plan because I am hesitant on chemo as I have had it before. So had another scan on XXXXXXX 3. No change in scan and dr. did falsodex again, but then said that the omentum is hard to see in a scan and could still me some progression. So here I am, waiting to go to the doctor again, wondering what kinda rollercoaster he will put me on or give me the falsodex again. All my labs are good, except last time I was a little anemic which has been a problem of mine anyway. So, I ask you with those tumor markers going up slightly what would your recommendations be for treatment.

Brief Answer:
we should change therapy now.

Detailed Answer:
hi madam,
good morning.
for metastatic breast cancer we have 3 treatment options - chemotherapy, hormonal therapy and targeted therapy. the response of therapy on tumor may be classified as - responsive, stable or progressive. if the tumor is stable on a treatment we can continue with that.
you are presently on hormonal therapy. as you said it is slowly progressive, so i think it is time to change the treatment plan. the tumor might have become resistant to present drugs.
there are many drugs among chemotherapy. injection trastuzumab can be used as targeted therapy. these drugs may be used alone or as combination therapy.
i think this explains the facts to you.
feel free to ask further.
