Question: Hi my brother down in West Palm Beach, Fla. just had a tumor taken out of left axillary area, last week, and they told him it is Melanoma, he only found this lump in his armpit just 2 weeks ago when he was showering and when he went to his dermatologist, she set XXXXXXX up for emergency surgery and when the doctor took out the tumor it measured 71/2 cm, the picture that he sent me it looked like a piece of chicken that's what he said to make things a little lighter. Anyways, my brother goes to the oncologist this Wed. and he wants to know what questions should he be asking the doctor?

Brief Answer:
several thigs

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome.
I am sorry about this serious disease. It is good that he noticed this lump and that it is removed completely, but it is not good sign that melanoma is found when it already metastasized to axilla. First, the exact type, grade and differentiation of tumor should be analysed. Primary tumor should be found on body and removed and also extensive imaging tests CT, scan, PET scan should be performed to look for other possible metastatic sites. I hope that no such will be found and then prognosis is good. oncologist may recommend biological or chemotherapy in some cases or radiotherapy of axilla if tumor isnt completely removed. Wish you good health. Regards
