Suggest Treatment For Mass On The Lower Neck

default
Posted on Thu, 1 Oct 2015
Question: Hello-47 yr/o female, mother died age 22 of Hodgkin's Disease in 1968. I have a soft mass about the size of a small egg on my right lower neck (over the clavicle). I don't palpitate anything hard inside it at all--it does not hurt, and the skin is normal. The same swelling is less, but also on the other side of my neck. Recent bloodwork showed high Epstein Barr Virus numbers (shows 180 with 0-17.9 being the normal range). ALSO had what docs believe was/is an AVM in my leg--it has disappeared. MRI, ultrasound and other tests were used to diagnose. I don't know if that's tied in at all. No weight loss, but EXTREMELY fatigued, and have been for months. Disabling fatigue. Heavy sweating (in cool temps) Of course, I am worried about lymphoma. Could be just menopause setting in?

Brief Answer:
Lymph nodes ultrasound should be done.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

First of all some clarification. Not every person infected with EBV has a Hodgkins Lymphoma. Secondly this disease does not run in the family.

Left clavicle lymph node is called Virchow`s node. If enlarged lymph node appears in this location can be a sign of head and neck cancer as well as stomach cancer. If you do smoke, throat, larynx, lungs cancer should be ruled out at first. Sweating, fatigue are present not only in case of lymphoma but also in case of other cancer.
I do not tell that you have any cancer. Not at all. Your symptoms can be just caused by hormonal changes indeed.
But cancer has to be ruled out. I suggest you to start with lymph nodes ultrasound. If elevated, should be removed and tested.

And one more thing. In 1968 Hodgkins Lymphoma was a fatal disease. Nowadays, is treatable in many cases so it became the best lymphoma to have.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
