Question: Thanks..My wife beginning decades back has had an increasingly growing back hump..She walks, also with her neck/head becoming more & more tilted..She now tells me that she has been ignoring a lump in back of the neck..which she decribes as surfacing & dissappearing..Can you provide initial comments?Thank you..Presume all questions/comments now imputed & to await your reply..If not correct please advise

A gradually increasing hump in the back is a postural change. The curvature of the cervical spine decreases and causes the last cervical vertebra to become more prominent. An X-ray of the neck in lateral view will help in confirming this. Improvisation of posture will help.

Hi Doctor,

You kindly answered the question I asked today(Monday)concerning my wife having a hunched back for which I thank you..One point, however, I mentioned is that in addition to her"hump" I discovered today from her that she has a small lump on the lower portion of the back of her neck, which to me, is a bit worrisome.....she advised me she has had it for some time..Coming home now, I felt it and it's about 1 inch circular & fairly hard...she tells me that she has up to now ignored it. She also pointed out that when she bends her neck downwards it receedes....As I may have mentioned she also takes thyroid medication ( for years) inasmuch has she has low thyroid..Please allow me the continued benefit of guidance..Of course I appreciate that she will need to see a doctor here, but any pre-liminary comments from you would be most sincerely appreciated...Finally I am a Chief Executive of a worldwide re-insurance broker company....US RE Corporation and very close to India's leading insurance and reinsurance broker, JB Boda with offices throughout XXXXXXX & in other countries..I will be with XXXXXXX Boda next month..and also XXXXXXX Lall, my cousin through marriage is a prominent lawyer here in the U.S. who is well known throughout the XXXXXXX community in the U.S.

Can be a lipoma.

Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
The small lump that your wife has discovered can be a prominent cervical spine or a soft tissue swelling like a lipoma. Since the swelling is not painful and is not aggressively increasing in size it is not worrisome. However an X-ray and FNAC will help in confirming the diagnosis.
