Question: I am a 56 year old woman , it great shape, runner, not over weight. Last Friday I started feeling fatigued with low back pain and low grade temperature and chills which continued until Wednesday when I spiked a fever of 103. I went to the Doctor on Thursday and he did a urine, cbs , strep test . I had no cough or sore throat . My chest was a little tight and I think I was a little dehydrated. My chest X-ray showed a left lobe pneumonia . BC and urine normal. When I got home I noticed a significant swollen lymph node on my neck below my jaw. I am on my 3rd day of levofloxacin. I am concerned about the node it is firmed and attached .it doesn't seem super tender but I know it's there. If I push my throat over to the left it protrudes. I have very little cough still. My concern is lymphoma or could it be swollen from the pneumonia . Is it unusual not to have a cough?

Brief Answer:
may not be significant lymph node

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

A swollen lymph node just below jaw can't be explained by pneumonia. The lymp nodes enlarged due to pneumonia are inside the chest and can't be felt. The most common cause of enlarged lymph nodes in that area are upper respiratory infection and dental or ear problems. Most of the time, if we don't feel suspicious during examination, we don't investigate further.

I am sure your doc had felt the gland and thought it is benign, hence did not order further investigations.

Sometimes pneumonia may not present with too much cough. But fever of 103 and patch on X-ray is very much suggestive of pneumonia.

For the lymp node, I won't be too much concerned right now. When you go for follow up, take it up with your doc. If it still feels benign, then nothing to do.

Hope this helps.
Regards
