Posted on Mon, 19 Dec 2016
Question: I have an enlarged spleen and low platlets below 100. My Dr. Has been testing my blood every 6 months for almost 2 years and just completed scans on my organs and discovered an enlarged spleen. Now he wants me to wait until Feb. To run another blood test. What is he waiting for ? Why not do the bone marrow extraction Now ?

Brief Answer:
Need to look at the actual results

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

Low platelet below 100,000 with significant enlarged spleen require further evaluation possibly including a bone marrow. But sometimes spleen enlargement seen on scans is mild and not of great significance.

So I need to look at the actual blood counts and the scan reports to give further suggestion.

Can you please upload the reports here or send them by email to YYYY@YYYY with attn Dr Indranil Ghosh.

Brief Answer:
Nothing of serious concern here

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

The platelet count is bit low but more than the danger level of 100,000. The spleen is 14.6 cm, which is mild enlargement only. This much is seen in many healthy individuals too.

The hb and wbc counts are ok. So unless there are other symptoms like fever, weight loss, etc, there is no immediate concern here.

You can follow what your doc says and do another check up in Feb.

Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for your response. I did forget to mention that I started having night sweats about a month ago. Not every night, but about 3 times a week or so. Wake up sopping wet.

Brief Answer:
That is of concern

Detailed Answer:
These symptoms would warrant further investigations to rule out lymphoma. I would recommend a CT scan of chest and abdomen for the same.
