Question: My mom is 84. She has heart problems and had a stent put in. She also has myocardial infarction. She is on lopressor 25mg/day,aspirin 81 mg/day,magnisesium oxide 400mg/day,ranexaer 500mg/2xday,rovustatin calcium (crestor)20mg/day,benicar 40mg/day,combivent (as needed) vit. b-12,vit. b-3 dexilant 60mg/day. She has had diarrhea for ever ! This is why the doc. put her on dexilant which is not working. I have been working with her with her diet to slow this and spoke with the doctor about probiotics and lactose free . It will work (or slow ) for a bit but start back again. She had blood work done on 07/23/2016 and every thing was out of whack-since I have been working with her,her new blood work is good but her hemoglobin is 10.1 &hematocrit level is also dropped to 34.4-everything else is fine and back up to normal. This blood work was done on 02/22/2017. I guess my question is can you give me a direction & could this be from combination of medications.

also has mycrovalve prolaspe

Brief Answer:
Dietary adjustment needs to be tried.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concerns. Low hemoglobin levels are frequently encountered in females with advanced age. I would insist you to give her iron supplements. That should help in increasing both the hemoglobin level as well as hematocrit. She also needs to eat a wholesome meal regularly. Daily morning walk is very important (if she is ambulatory).

I would insist you to ask her doctor to try a course of rifaximin for the chronic diarrhea.

The valve prolapse might need surgical intervention. Details has to be discussed with her cardiologist.

Let me know if I could help further. Pardon me if I have left any portion of your query unanswered.

Regards
