Question: My wife is having her third child. First 2 were C sections and the babies were heavy (elder one 4.6 kg & 2nd one 4.2 kg). The planned date for delivery / C section is Nov 15. Yesterday, we checked her Hemoglobin levels and it was found to be 7.5. Is there cause for worry and what should be done?

Brief Answer:
Low hemoglobin needs to treated

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for your query.

I have read you query and I understand your concerns about low hemoglobin.

Following is my reply:

1) Her hemoglobin is low and she is suffering from anemia.

2) Please show the reports to her doctor and start her on injectable iron preparations.

3) Her hemoglobin needs to be improved as her it is important for baby growth as well as her health.

4) Let her have foods rich in iron such as dates, apples, jaggery etc..

5) If no improvement seen by her delivery date, she might need to get blood transfusion done.

I hope I answered you query and addressed your concerns.

Let me know if you wish to ask any further questions. I will be glad to help you.

Dr. Mahesh Koregol.
